2010 Santa Pola Duathlon Cross

RunMountain BikeRunSanta Pola Duatlon Cros 2010While flicking through the Spanish TV channels one boring afternoon in Sept 2009 I heard a presenter mention Santa Pola over a video of runners setting off along a seafront promenade.  Recognising the town as one only an hour or so away which we had recently visited I decided to watch a little more.

The commentator kept mentioning the word “duatlon” which was new to me so I watched not knowing what to expect, the first runners finished the 4.9km route then jumped on mountain bikes and set off along the seafront and then inland and onto rougher ground covering a 19km route before returning their bikes to run a further 2.9km.  I decided that if this was an annual event it would be a perfect challenge for me and I had a year to prepare.

The Dreaded Bricks

RunningMountain BikingRunningMountain BikingRunningBrick TrainingAfter reading a few websites and talking to a few runners/bikers, it became clear that a few weeks before a Duathlon or Triathlon I should mix my training up with some bricks.

So what are bricks?

Castell de Castells & Guadalest In One Day

Mountain BikeIt was pretty overcast this morning at 07:00 when the alarm woke me from my slumber, staggering bleary eyed around the house looking out of all the windows didn’t help the situation, grey everywhere.  Do I, don’t I that was the question, the obvious answer, have some breakfast and think about it.

The clouds started to clear a bit as I stuffed down cornflakes and hastily made tea, ah best drink of the day, the ride is on.

The Lead Balls

RunningBread bun or Small LoafNo this isn’t a reference to me physically but rather to the contents of my stomach.  How many times must I set off running / cycling after having eaten the wrong food before it finally sinks in.

We had had a rather busy day I was out working and my wife was manning the phones in the office, when I decided it would be nice to pick her and my son up and take them for lunch, this we did and lovely it was.  However in the evening neither of us fancied very much to eat as lunch had been so filling, so out with the bread buns, ham and salad and a feast was prepared.

Montgo Or Bust

Mountain BikingView towards Moraira and the coastWell bust is what it felt like as I cycled over the end of Montgo this morning.  It’s been a busy social weekend with Friday night out with the family for well earned fish and chips after an unusually busy week followed by a BBQ late Saturday afternoon at a friend’s house.  Great fun and a few ciders were had along with the usual burgers, sausages I did manage to squeeze in the health option of salad, but probably not enough to counter the rest.

Sierra Olta Calpe Costa Blanca

Mountain Bike

Calpe Rock from Sierra OltaAfter many months of road riding and running I decided that some proper mountain biking was in order, so out came the maps and the walking guide books looking for a suitable route.  This is a little difficult in this area of the Costa Blanca as we are surrounded by mountains, to some this would seem a strange statement to make but when you are out and about looking at the mountains they are large and imposing with few visible paths.

The Longer Way Round

Running

Today I decided it was about time to attempt a slightly longer run, only adding 1.5km should be easy or so I thought.

The first part went well as it is my normal route, but then I had a decision to make go left as usual or turn right to add the extra distance.

The Usual Circuit.

Mountain Bike, MTBThe usual circuit is my morning cycling route around the local area, it is from home across the valley, uphill through the town of Benissa, across the valley again and down to the village of Jalon, then Lliber and finally the longish climb back out of the Jalon valley and home.
