A Day Out In Benidorm

Chris alderton La Nucia BMX 4X TrackFollowing on from the 2012 BTT Benidorm, my son and I decided to rerun part of the route at a slower more relaxed pace.  We started at the Poniente side of the town at the point the original route went off-road and headed uphill following some of the markers left from the previous weekend.

2012 BTT Benidorm

BTT Benidorm 2012Mountain BikingAfter a couple of months of prevarication and off putting my wife entered me in the BTT Benidorm.  After last years BTT Jalon, I had mentioned that an assault on the championship would be fun, not competitively you understand, but just as a personal challenge.  Not realising that the start was 4th March I managed to miss the first two events without knowing about them and then started to wonder whether it was a good idea anyway.

So with a surprise entry now in hand and only two weeks to prepare I noticed that the Benidorm event has a good amount of climbing (& descents) and is one of the longest on the calendar, oh dear what had I let myself in for.

Are You Sitting Comfortably?

Tamika MTB SaddleWhen I got back into mountain biking a few years ago the answer to this question was a resounding NO.  The saddle on my old bike was very much of the racing variety whereas my body shape was more comfort oriented.  Managing for a few months with the old seat seemed appropriate as this new found enthusiasm for cycling may have subsided as quickly as it appeared and being a Yorkshire man I’m not in the habit of frittering away the pennies.

Train In The Rain

Rain Over The TerraceLooking out across the rain soaked terrace this morning reminded me of the UK in my teens.  Setting off from my parent’s house to run around the local lanes through puddles and mud left by tractors, trying to gain a faster time or run a greater distance than the previous effort.

This morning though the motivation wasn’t quite there, rain and fog aren’t a good combination for running therefore breakfast, followed by shopping seemed like a better idea.

The problem is an old one, how to get motivated in the winter?

Hangover Cure

WalkPinder School ScarboroughMountain BikeSchool reunions: full of people trying to out do each other, divorcees looking to rekindle their school romances or people simply looking to have an evening catching up with old friends?  I’ve heard all sorts of conflicting stories over the years so it was with this in mind that I approached the event held on Sat 12th November in my home town of Scarborough North Yorkshire.  It had been planned over the previous few months mainly using Facebook to contact as many of the class of 86 as possible, reaching around 70 in total out of 150ish.

As the date grew closer flights and train tickets where booked and the FB event list had more and more confirmed people.  I had stayed in touch with 2 of my best friends from school over the years so Ian, Dave and I decided to go together for moral support and to have a sneaky pint beforehand.  Ian is also a keen mountain biker so a plan was hatched to make more of the weekend by fitting in a days ride on the Sunday before my return flight on the Monday morning.

The Curse Of Black Foot

RunningBlack ToeAfter running as a teen and then again for the last couple of years I haven’t had any problems with my appendages.  That is until this years Santa Pola Duathlon Cross.

The event went without incident as described in the article and to my surprise I could still walk at the end, more than can be said for the previous years effort.  The problem reared it’s ugly head or to be more precise toe a couple of days later when I prepared for and set off on a normal training run.

2011 Santa Pola Duathlon Cross

RunningMTBRunning

Duathlon Cros Santa Pola 2011The Santa Pola Duathlon Cross is a daunting challenge for a newbie like I was in 2010, you can read about my experiences HERE.  But for me 2010 was just the beginning I had caught the duathlon bug and wanted to try again.

So a year on from my first attempt and I am here again, better prepared, both mentally and physically and with better organisation (my wife brought that bit).

2011 BTT Bernia

2011 BTT BerniaMountain BikingChatting to our mechanic as he repaired the car he told me about a mountain bike race in the local village of Jalon over the coming weekend.  Having never entered a race of this type I thought it might be worth a go, assuming that is I could get an entry.

Trawling the internet I found the BTT Bernia site and found that to enter I had to make a bank transfer within the hour then email a copy of the receipt to them and take the original on the day to complete the entry, after a but of rushing about I had my entry.
