Longest Day MTB Challenge

Not sure if any of my regular readers have noticed, but there has been a distinct lack of effort this year.  So far I have competed in 0 events in 2013, and done little training in general.  I'm not quite sure what's going on but I have found many things to blame such as the weather, dark mornings, work and a bunch of other even less believable things.

2012 BTT Jesus Pobre

Mountain biking at night with lights! Are you mad? Well that was my first reaction when I noticed that the 1st Jesus Pobre event would be nocturnal.  Asking a couple of cyclist friends neither of them had entered such an event before and I really wasn’t sure that it was a good idea, maybe I’ll give this one a miss.

2012 BTT Bernia

The weekend started well with a reasonably relaxed Saturday in readiness for an early Sunday start.  Having forgotten to register it meant getting there earlier than usual as registering on the day at the last minute is not recommended.

Sunday morning came around all too soon and off I went bike and kit packed in the van.  Jalon (Xalo) is only about 6km from where I live so not too far to drive.  Registration went without a hitch and I managed to sneak back home for another cuppa and a bit more breakfast before returning for the start.  At this point I started to realise that I wasn’t quite myself, not ill as such but not fully normal (if normal is ever possible).

2012 BTT Benidorm

BTT Benidorm 2012Mountain BikingAfter a couple of months of prevarication and off putting my wife entered me in the BTT Benidorm.  After last years BTT Jalon, I had mentioned that an assault on the championship would be fun, not competitively you understand, but just as a personal challenge.  Not realising that the start was 4th March I managed to miss the first two events without knowing about them and then started to wonder whether it was a good idea anyway.

So with a surprise entry now in hand and only two weeks to prepare I noticed that the Benidorm event has a good amount of climbing (& descents) and is one of the longest on the calendar, oh dear what had I let myself in for.

2011 Santa Pola Duathlon Cross

RunningMTBRunning

Duathlon Cros Santa Pola 2011The Santa Pola Duathlon Cross is a daunting challenge for a newbie like I was in 2010, you can read about my experiences HERE.  But for me 2010 was just the beginning I had caught the duathlon bug and wanted to try again.

So a year on from my first attempt and I am here again, better prepared, both mentally and physically and with better organisation (my wife brought that bit).

2011 BTT Bernia

2011 BTT BerniaMountain BikingChatting to our mechanic as he repaired the car he told me about a mountain bike race in the local village of Jalon over the coming weekend.  Having never entered a race of this type I thought it might be worth a go, assuming that is I could get an entry.

Trawling the internet I found the BTT Bernia site and found that to enter I had to make a bank transfer within the hour then email a copy of the receipt to them and take the original on the day to complete the entry, after a but of rushing about I had my entry.

2010 Santa Pola Duathlon Cross

RunMountain BikeRunSanta Pola Duatlon Cros 2010While flicking through the Spanish TV channels one boring afternoon in Sept 2009 I heard a presenter mention Santa Pola over a video of runners setting off along a seafront promenade.  Recognising the town as one only an hour or so away which we had recently visited I decided to watch a little more.

The commentator kept mentioning the word “duatlon” which was new to me so I watched not knowing what to expect, the first runners finished the 4.9km route then jumped on mountain bikes and set off along the seafront and then inland and onto rougher ground covering a 19km route before returning their bikes to run a further 2.9km.  I decided that if this was an annual event it would be a perfect challenge for me and I had a year to prepare.
